Increasingly, the culture war between progressives and conservatives (not to mention all the factions in between) is being fought at the wallet and in the checkbook. In our capitalist society, the theory goes, having any noticeable effect on the world means cutting off the money stream to organizations doing stuff you find morally reprehensible. In the case of shopping for your everyday essentials, this means figuring out the money trail behind all those brands you see in the store.

But tracking money is the whole problem. How do you take an innocuous brand and trace the spiderweb of corporate ownership up until you reach the source? Traditionally, it involves lots of research most people don’t want to bother with. And quite impossible when you are standing in the isle at the supermarket, eyeballing two almost-identical cans of peas, trying to remember which corporate owner went on record supporting deadly sweatshop fires regarding some distantly connected clothing supplier.

Back in 2012, Democratic congressional candidate Darcy Burner made the original pitch at a NetRoots conference. She called for the development of a smartphone app able to judge a product from its bar code and lay out the otherwise obfuscated political message contained inside.

Boycott apps typically uses crowdsourced campaign information. Anyone can create a new campaign at any time (currently the list at Buycott has over 18 pages of them) and the campaign can be either an exclusive (don’t buy this product) or an inclusive (yes buy this product!) one. This allows the consumer to not only reject a product that doesn’t support their values, but it also allows the consumer to accept particular products whose global leaders have contributed campaign money towards a goal they agree with.

Hiding the Money

The entire system of corporate campaign finance donations is in part so successful because the huge conglomerates making those contributions are so well separated from the subsidiaries that do all the actual work. This murkiness allows a company to support pet views of their board of directors without having to answer for them in the global marketplace.

But now if enough people are watching carefully, the truth is going to be known. Donations in conflict with customer expectations will have the same reception as a donation contrary to shareholder expectations…immediate backlash.

The Future of Boycotting

How will this spotlight on corporate political actions affect the world tomorrow? Even with all the information at your fingertips, the typical grocery store or big box department store is not going to offer a lot of options besides the few same old multinational brand holders. Depending on the campaign you are supporting it’s difficult to find ANY choice other than between evil corporation A or evil corporation B.

But with enough user adoption, and users reaching a threshold of action based on the supplied information, boycott apps could indeed be an incredibly trans-formative piece of tech. The power of the people made manifest, for good or for bad. Only time will tell.

They pretty much give away their software for free but ultimately, they expire and they would require you to purchase their OS or software to continue using them. Nowadays, it is already a common practice for schools to include teaching Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel into their curriculum. Ultimately, this limits the knowledge of students and the versatility they could obtain instead if they are to use simple text editors and spreadsheet applications.

Essentially, it gives rights to their users, but ultimately, more rights are given to Microsoft. An example would be you won’t be allowed to install the operating system you bought to all your computers at home. You are not even allowed to install other operating systems to a device that is already pre-loaded with Windows, for example.

Firms exist to earn and maximize profits. And in ensuring profits, many firms find the most effective ways of production that will result in lower production costs for higher profits.

But what happens when a firm’s action have raised the ire of the public with its want to maximize profits?

Adidas, the famous shoe manufacturer learned its lesson to be careful in their ways of making money.

The shoe brand has experienced being boycotted by some of its patrons, and even being refused by one of its top endorsers.

It is when a firm’s clientele is boycotting the firm by refusing to buy its services or products.   The cause for boycott is simple; a company has done harm to society.

In the case of Adidas, it has experienced boycott because of its chosen materials for its shoe product.

For some time, the shoemaker has been using leather from kangaroos to produce its prestige boots that was being used by the football players of the Premier League. Animal groups have rallied against the use of kangaroo to produce the boots product.

Kangaroos had to be culled through shooting of the older kangaroos and clubbing the young ones until they die. Animal welfare activists wanted an end to such animal cruelty and had pleaded to Adidas to stop the use of kangaroo leather for its shoe product.

The use of kangaroo skin is common for the big shoe manufacturers. In fact, several big stars have endorsed shoe products made from kangaroo skin like John Terry, Frank Lampard and even David Beckham.

AustralianWildlifePreservationCouncilBeckham had stopped using and promoting any shoe product made from kangaroo skin in 2006, but other firms continued the manufacture of products using the same material.

The Australian Wildlife Protection Council or AWPC together with another animal welfare organization, Viva! worked hand in hand to stop companies from selling any products that are made from kangaroos including its meat.

“We have harried and opposed the Australian killing industry for more than a decade with considerable success. This latest move away from kangaroo leather is because Viva! has tarnished Adidas’ image and therefore their profitability. You can’t be a ‘little bit’ pregnant and you can’t be a little bit immoral so we urge Adidas to drop kangaroo completely,” Viva had said in a statement.

There is a very large population of kangaroos in Australia that sometimes, this animal is considered as a pest.

Adidas, for its part finally heeded the calls of the animal welfare organizations as it announced the stoppage of the use of kangaroo skin for the manufacture of some shoe products in 2012.

It had then said that the Predator boots line is no longer made from kangaroos skin, and that it had planned to lessen the use of the kangaroo skin for the said shoe product in a period of one year.

“We engaged with Adidas in connection with their continued use of kangaroo leather. We noted positively the successful transition of the Predator range that no longer contains kangaroo leather and that within the next 12 months Adidas will have reduced their sourcing volume for kangaroo leather by 98 per cent,” Adidas had said back then.

The move of Adidas also prompted other shoe manufacturer to follow suit while the animal welfare groups hailed the decision of Adidas to stop using kangaroo skin.

The head of internal operations and EU campaign director of AWPC, Philip Woolley noted “Having worked tirelessly for over ten years to get sports companies like Adidas to stop using kangaroo skin, the news of Adidas dropping their use on ethical and animal welfare grounds, is just a fantastic result.”

Similarly, its competitor, Nike had experienced the same situation in the past. Nike saw a decline in sales after an activist had exposed the poor working conditions of Nike’s factory workers in third world countries particularly in Vietnam.

A video was produced and spread which showed that the Nike factories in Vietnam were nothing short of sweatshops.

Nike in the 1990s had expanded its business and as such had to outsource its operations to third world countries where labor is much cheaper. But Nike as a company did not bother to check how the factories are being run, and if the workers’ working conditions were good.

John Keady, an American graduate student researched and produced the video that showed the inhumane working environment of Nike factory workers. This prompted a widespread campaign and boycott of Nike’s products. Some universities mounted hunger strike to protest the use of Nike by their athletic teams.

Nike had first ignored the increasing protests, but realized that they had to address the issue as the protests were already hurting the profits. The shoe manufacturer had decided to come up with concrete steps in order to address the poor working conditions in its factories.

Does Procter and Gamble Test their products on animals?

There has been a recent chaos in public, blaming the American multinational consumer goods company Procter and Gamble for testing their products on animals and cruelty to animals while they are still alive. This has caused uproar among the animal right activists all over the world who are outraged because of this in-humane practice.

According to a UK based website ‘Uncaged’, Procter and Gamble has admitted using animals including guinea pigs, rodents, ferrets, hamsters and mice for their so-called product safety research.

The research includes insertion of harmful chemicals and toxins into these animals, making them eat the chemicals. This is not all; it is believed that these animals are not given even the most basic animals rights as they await their turn to get tested on.

“P&G are engineering ultra-tiny ‘nano’ particles that can penetrate skin and hair in ways that naturally occurring molecules don’t.” Uncaged, November 2012.*

The nanosoot particles these animals are forced to inhale contaminate their lungs, and that’s the basic idea, the company wants to see HOW MUCH damage these particles can cause to lungs.

According to Uncaged*, a few animals that were being tested on died before the test could be concluded; the main reason for their death was improper care; there were at least 9 rats that were deprived of water during the testing. Hamsters also died of illness after they were kept in plastic cages; the sad part is the scientists knew that these cages would be harmful to the anima. The laboratory cage itself induces stress.

However, P&G denies this and has published the alternative research strategies they are now using and the cost they are paying to conduct those researches.

“We have developed more than 50 non-animal testing methods and invested more than $330 million in research and development in finding these alternatives.” Says Animal Welfare and alternatives. **

“We have also reduced the need for animal tests by developing technologies such as in vitro cell culture tests, advanced chemistry methods, and cultured human tissue. We recently spent $3 million on a new research program that creates in vitro skin and cornea equivalents as alternatives to animal testing.” Says the article, We are Committed to Eliminating Research involving Animals on P&G website. ***

Not only this, but the company also claims to be at the forefront in eliminating this cruelty towards animals all over the world. About 99 percent of their researches involve the alternative methods of research, the remaining one percent includes those allowed by law or when no other alternatives or options are left.

But the news is P&G has been lying about the fact that they are now trying alternative methods. Despite all what they say the company is still using the animals as their test subject, obviously keeping it a secret.

Uncaged* believes that P&G is aware of its cruelty and how it appalls people. However instead of changing their methods the company invests huge sums of money in PR to twist the truth and present a decent version of their animal testing.

According to the vast researches made by Uncaged, despite of condemning the act and publishing the reports stating the use of alternative methods, P&G is still involved in the cruel act of mistreating animals and displaying its soft image to the world by telling lies. Because there are so many basic life products that P&G is manufacturing, and each one of it touches our lives on a daily basis, so it practically rules the lives of masses. Uncaged claims that it is all about money for P&G and money is the only way to make them understand the severity of their actions. Uncaged believes that boycotting P&G will help save thousands of innocent animal that have to undergo cruel testing and die because of it.

But the sad part is it seems highly unlikely that P&G will face any serious consequences and it seems that not many people will choose to or can afford to boycott this consumer goods manufacturing giant.
